Sounds are off. How to turn back on?

For some reason, out of nowhere, my sounds are off. Things like shutter are no longer making the sounds. How do I get the sounds back and why did it happen for no reason?

Usually it's just that you need to turn up the volume

Where? It's not the phone volume. It was unmuted with volume all the way up.

You didn't say if this was iOS or something else, but I use to have this problem from time to time on iOS and usually resolved by closing the app and relaunching it.

It hasn't happen for a long time, so I think it may have been caused by a unrelated app the I would guess I stopped using. A game perhaps. As an example, my wife plays some game that will stop her phone from ringing.
