satellites drop slightly when recording video - SOLVED

Recording video makes the phantom loose GPS connection

Weird problem. I own P2V+
The problem is as soon as I start video recording. The GPS lock fails. Phantom starts blinking yellow. Turn of camera recording. GPS lock pops back in. Phantom blinking green. Taking pictures does not affect the GPS signal. The phantom is brand new. Also if i have the phantom on the ground i get between 7 and 9 satellites. Turn on recording the satellite number drop immediately down to between 3 and 5.
Whats causing this interference? Any ideas?

Thank you.

Re: Recording video makes the phantom loose GPS connection

I have flown many times and each time the GPS remains with a good lock.

PERHAPS.. your particular drone's camera sub-system induces more noise than typical.
This can be caused by only one faulty noise filtering component such as an RF filtering capacitor or inductor on a circuit board somewhere in the drone (probably in the camera subsystem or even the GPS unit).
It is very hard to detect while in the manufacturing process.

Thanks for your answer.
So what would you recommend. Sending it back to the dealer?

Re: satellites drop slightly when recording video

Good luck there. DJI is apparently swamped with customer service issues coupled with how they staff and manage customer service.
You might be waiting a while; or perhaps not.

The Aluminum Foil mod shown in that video might help. It does not appear that hard to do.

That's exactly my concern aswell. The summer and vacation passes and I don´t have a drone to fly :/
What happens with warranty if I open up the pantom and modify it?

Don't ask. Don't tell. Our drone-wielding military practices that policy.

The foil mod appears to be pretty easy to do and restore back to factory conditions.
I would try to find the sticky backed foil instead of rigging up kitchen use foil.

Reguler 3M Aluminum Foil Tape should do the same job, yes?

Hmm, it should be OK. Overlap the foil-tape some to create capacitive coupling between the tape strips. Don't need a whole bunch of overlap; maybe 1/4" to 1/2".

I like the method shown in the video however; one clean cut piece. But, if you have the tape then you are faster to implement and get flying. Can always redo later if it does not fix the problem.

Re: satellites drop slightly when recording video

Dit the mod, I
test it soon :D

Re: satellites drop slightly when recording video

I have tested it outside and there is no lost off satellites at all while recording :D
It works !!!

Re: satellites drop slightly when recording video

Excellent!!! I hope the copper stuff I ordered yesterday is as effective!

Re: satellites drop slightly when recording video

Great. I'm trying it out tomorrow. Also using Alu-tape.
Do I have to put another layer of non-conductive tape over it?
Don't want it to short circuit anything.

Nope, I just put it on top :)

Ok great!
But putting a layer of PVC-tape on it won't effect anything I guess.

I hope I have the luck as you tomorrow :)
