safe to fly?

Just recieved my P3A unboxed it charged the batteries
the phantom came with a 16 gb sd card but I dont have an adapter yet
so im not sure if i can update the firmware

should I wait until the firmware is updated or is it safe to fly out of the box?

You don't need to update the firmware. You should do steps #47 and #48 here though:
