Can anyone tell me what the lever next to the battery compartment on the back of the radio transmitter is for?

That lever controls the tilt of the zenmuse or other connected gimbal, or that's the default purpose. It can be used for other things (though not very well) by changing channel assignments in the NAZA assistant software
