Ok, so recently I said I haven’t looked at a sectional chart since getting my 107... but that changed today. I have this shoot tomorrow right next to a private airfield... if I remember my sectional chart correctly, it’s on the hard side of magenta shading so it’s class e above 700’. I’d say class g except it has a airport.... The airport doesn’t have tower so besides trying to call the airport to let them know I’m doing a shoot almost right next door... what should I do besides obviously pay extreme attention for manned craft. I am not flying near the approach lines, but south of the airport. It’s morgantown airport. Btw near my arrow.

Am I thinking right? I’m taking a huge chance I won’t get flamed for asking for help... Morgantown airport next to glider symbol So no tower, don’ t need authorization... anything special besides normal below 400’, keep drone in sight etc???

Oh, it’s not marked with a “p” for private so it’s a public grass strip airport. Red bubble marks the spot, just northwest of airport. I misspoke above...

It looks like you’re outside of the Class E as well to me (even at that, like you said it’s E at 700’). Even though there is an airport, no other class is depicted, so it should be class G. As a Part 107 pilot myself (in other words NOT a lawyer ), I would proceed with the same assumptions, but get there early and study any activity at the airport.

You also have quite a few visual flight rule paths (if I remember correctly that’s what the “V” stands for) so be cautious of planes that COULD be flying low, although it would be highly unlikely.

I would also check B4UFLY (FAA just gave it a really nice update) for that location just to make sure.

Thanks for the reply... I appreciate your thoughts on this... it just seems weird to fly that close to an airport with everything I’ve been told/ taught. I know it’s not a towered airport so I dont need authorization, but still it’s weird. Yes I’ll steer clear of the flight paths... and I’ll mostly be under 100’ but I do like to hit 400’ (if allowed) to get in shots of the neighborhood.

It’s weird how all around is the blurred magenta marking the “e”, and right above is the dashed magenta marking a class e to ground level for reading airport, but nothing for Morgantown. And like I said the hard part of the “e” is towards it indicating higher than 700’, with the blurred side towards the other airports marking below 700’ for those other airports (hope that makes sense). If I remember my material... for some reason e is the hardest to remember with all the different levels of “to ground”, or below 700’ or 1200’ (if blue blurred)... makes my head hurt.

All I have to say is that I envy whoever lives at that place, it looks like they're only a minute or two from Lowe's! To get to home Depot from my house takes over 20 minutes, and 40 minutes to get to Lowe's.

I do like the FAA redesign of b4ufly app, but I personally would suggest use the Kitty hawk app, it is basically the same thing. But the Kitty hawk app is more powerful, and the before you fly app is actually just running a dumb down version of Kitty hawk in my opinion.

Ha, it is a very scenic place to live. I used to work for Morgantown police back in early 90’s... was all farm land. It is slowly building up, heck they are even getting a casino.

If I lived that close to an airport, I’d be tempted to buy a airplane lol.

Oh well, I’m doing this job in 3 hours, I’ll post back and let you know how it goes...

I use airmap for the most part, it says no airspace authorization available (as there is no tower). I log all my flights with airmap or kittyhawk, even if ATC authorization isn’t needed.

Update. Okay did the job, after leaving a detailed voice message on airports machine. Got all my normal low shots and there were too many planes that started coming in, like it was quitting time in the sky or something. I bailed on my high shots, just landed and got out of there. Note: I could have safely gotten my shots, the planes were far enough away. However, given all the drone stigma, I didn’t want to freak out any of the manned planes. Don’t know if they could see me or not, but if they could I didn’t want them to panic because of the drone. I realize I am a safe operator, but I also know that “they” have no idea who I am, what I was doing or what my intentions were.

Better safe than sorry.

Just a reminder: any crop dusters in the area? Those pilots get a nosebleed at anything above treetop level plus they seldom use radios. Also ultralights tend to fly in the weeds. Many of them don’t have radios. Looks like a nice flying area.

I was worried about gliders... I sat and watched for a little and spoke with the homeowner about it too. They told me the regulars were all gone for the day. At least you can hear these slow moving planes before you see them.
