I have heard stories of the screws on the prop guards being too long and causing damage to the motors. I'm just getting my phantom fc40 and also prop guards with it, due to my inexperience in flying these. Is there a way to know if the screws are ill fitting? I'd really hate to mess up the thing before I ever get it in the air.

The screws that come with the prop guards are longer. What you need to do is take extra care when switching between flying guards on and guards off. People run into problems when they remove their prop guards but use the same screws to reattach to their motors--the longer screws go up and short or sever the windings.
