President in town

VIP Movements impact those of us that fly manned aircraft in the Air Traffic System, causing the operation thousands of dollars, in some cases, due to delays, alternate routing, use of less convenient airports, or grounding due to pop-up TFR’s. We almost got stuck on the ground in SE FL due to a sneaky TFR date/time that was published, and then there was a schedule change for POTUS. My copilot’s State Trooper husband had the real times that changed 1-hr after we departed early. Even Flight Service was not aware of the change until it happened. Saved!

In our case, we mostly operate from controlled airfields, so it’s almost impossible to violate. But, we operate the UAS, double checking right before take-off is prudent.

Please don't bring guns and gun control into the discussion. The thread will get closed as that is off-topic.

It's a parallelism, an analogy that happens to be very close. As the restrictions become more complex and numerous, it becomes difficult to practice with your device, whatever it may be.

I think that extending the TFR that far for drones is overreaching. Having a more reasonable 2 mile radius TFR for hobby drones makes more sense. They can't fly as fast or as far as a Cessna. 35 miles for ALL aircraft, whether manned or toy models, is pushing it. The good people of NJ will be grounded for the month of August, so I've read of this event. It's not hours, it's weeks. If it happened in my neck of the woods, I'd be furious and demanding a refund and return of the drone.

Imagine if your car wouldn't start because the President was within 35 miles of where it was parked.

No, I get it. But bringing up gun control in these forums is typically frowned upon.

“The FAA manages the navigable airspace to ensure the safety of aircraft and the efficient utilization of the airspace. In managing the navigable airspace and implementing TFRs, while the following is not an exhaustive list, the FAA considers factors such as: the area where the event will be held; the effect
AC 91-63C APPENDIX 6 flight restrictions will have on known aircraft operations; the estimated duration of the event; the degree of public interest; the number of spectators; the provisions for spectator safety; the number and types of participating aircraft; the use of mixed high/low performance aircraft; the impact on non- participating aircraft; the weather minimums; and the emergency procedures that will be in effect.

That last part is the key. POTUS movement involves a lot of helicopter activity and potential emergency procedures requiring the protection of airspace around them. In the event he needs to be evacuated quickly at low altitude in a rotorcraft, the last thing they want to deal with is civilian aircraft and drones.

But for a 35 mile radius? People are saying much of the state is affected.

As an air traffic controller, before I retired, the secret service would been in the tower and radar room with us as the TFR's and various airspace restrictions were in effect. On one occasion while in a not named major airport, a pilot decided to take off from a grass strip about 45 miles away. His destination was a small airport 5 south of the one I was working. Of course we saw it on radar and it was pretty spectacular seeing the two F-15 descend from FL290 and "escort" the Cessna out of the way. On most NCAA stadiums now, you'll find snipers with weapons which could 'prevent' a small aircraft attack if needed. They're on the roofs. Our drones and sUAS's really get under their skin and I'm sure is they could find the perps, they wouldn't be kind. Harsh? Maybe but they take the President pretty seriously.

So this is more about their egos than safety of the POTUS then?

DROP IT! Enough is enough and your posts like this (and the guns etc) are pointless and futile.

If you want to change the current rules/regulations petition those who are able to make these changes. Keep in mind that the National Airspace System (NAS) is a lot bigger and more complicated than our flying hobby aircraft. We are allowed to fly as long as we are able to integrate safely into the current system. Expecting everyone else to change to accommodate your needs is beyond futile and ridiculous. We are the smallest fish in the aviation pond.

Why do you keep harping on guns? I'm only stating that the FAA and POTUS treating toy model aircraft like they were full sized aircraft is absurd because of the differences in scale. The NFZs should be different for both types. That's all.

As is the norm lately, this topic is sliding into the ditches and as such is now closed. We're better than this so let's prove it going forward.
