In my flyaway case my Phantom was replaced but even though I supposedly bound my old TX to the new Phantom(red light turned off) I had no control, was unable to calibrate, etc.
After working with DJI Support I sent my replacement Phantom back and they returned it along with a new TX. Everything has worked well since then.
The RX is $13 after all...
I honestly do not know. A guy that was doing beta testing and support for Empire until he had a falling out posted a couple of videos where the Phantom was flying away and going to Manual was able to arrest the flyaway but resulted in a crash. It did not appear that the TX/RX was at fault.

I also think that a problem in the TX/RX would be a much more simple diagnosis and fix for DJI than something with the FC/gps/compass. But again, I really don't know, just the notion I get while reading the reports.
