Do you guys thing we will be able to control our phantoms from our smart phones just like the mavic can? Or is that not going to be possible.

No, Wi-Fi cannot control a lightbridge craft.
Wi-Fi is so cheap, it appears DJI has put two communication systems within the Mavic ocu-sync system, one of them is plain ole Wi-Fi that allows standard Wi-Fi control by cell phones for short distances, very short. Maybe we'll learn more details as time goes by.

If you are an app developer, you can definitely develop a tethered app for your phone that can work with your RC.
I have flown parrot drones using iPhones but I like to use sticks to maneuver. It's easy to tilt left right forward backward but I'm more comfortable with RC
