Has anyone taken your bird as carry on baggage? I was thinking that if I removed the props the bird might fit in the overhead bin. Of course I would have to make sure no one jammed a suitcase against it. Thanks

I placed mine in a cheap Contico storage box and placed it in a normal regulation size rolling carry-on bag. See link for the box.

The Phantom fits in the dry box with props off. It has room for 2 extra batteries, controller, at least 6 props, charger, and tools. It is easy to carry onto the beach, it is watertight and it is cheap. Contico does not sell them anymore so you may only ind a used one. It may not not have room for FPV monitor.
It fits into the carry-on luggage and I had room for my DSLR and two additional lenses.

You could easily put the drybox in the a duffle bag.

I just carried it on in a hardside suitcase with clothes packed around it. There are a bunch of carry on size bags on ebay with foam cut out to fit.
With a little experimenting, I have found that the bird (sans props) fits in my 5.11 back pack. It has a very solid, rigid insert on the shoulder strap side. With a cottage cheese container protecting the camera/gimble, it seems to fit just fine with lots of room to spare.

I have a similar bag but in my excitement to protect my new toy, I went with the pricey 5.11 Rush 72 Hour backpack option from GPC (Go Professional Cases). It was $270 (shipping + California tax). :?
But so far I have been very happy with it. As you know, the 5.11 bags are made really well and the foam does a great job of protecting it. I was really paranoid about damaging the supposedly delicate gimbal.
We're hoping to go on a Hawaii trip next year and I feel confident that it will make it there unscathed in the GPC backpack. I just wish the bag was a bit smaller. It feels huge on my medium 175lb frame.
