Was flying and everything was going well until about a minute into the flight it started to drift and wouldn't respond. Even the come home option didn't work. It's now in the middle of Mobile Bay...

Hate it when that happens. If you want some help as to what went wrong, there may be data within your flight log that people here can decipher for you. Go to this link here and upload your log, then post the link back here so others can read it. Here's the link: DJI Flight Log Viewer | Phantom Help.

Follow the instructions and come back here with the link.

As mentioned, the flight data will answer the question. I suspect that the aircraft had a compass error of some sort from your description. When this occurs, the aircraft will switch to ATTI mode, meaning no GPS positioning and you may not have been familiar with flying in this mode. Unless you lost signal while in ATTI you can still control it. Return to home will not work with loss of GPS. Only the logs will answer your question. But again if you lost complete signal, some events will not be there in the logs.

If complete connection is lost and GPS either ATTI flying skill is of no use!
This is the situation which we all afraid of. Nothing to do except being very angry and feel yourself very stupid and humiliated even.
This really should never happened.

We don't know what happened except that the drone was lost.
Recorded flight data might solve the mystery but the OP has not been back since he posted this.
It would seem that he's not interested to know what happened.

Losing GPS when flying in the open is very unusual.
I've never experienced it in 5 years of flying.
And loss of signal should just mean that RTH is triggered.

RTH? It would came back wasn't it?
It would .. if it was triggered.
And as long as it wasn't prevented from getting home by wind, low battery, obstacles, etc.
I've investigated too many of these to make assumptions based on a one-line description from someone that wasn't interested enough to come back within three days to see what people have suggested.
Flight data usually tells a lot more than the OP did.
