There is no difference in image quality.
Some software is limited in the file formats it will read and so you have a choice for recording formats.
.mov is a default format for Apple systems and Windows computers usually use .mp4

I notice that MOV is about 4 times the size of MP4.

.mov and.mp4 are just wrappers.
The video inside the wrapper is the same.

MOV for Apple, MP4 for Windows.

Yepper. You can even convert a file from MOV to MP4 and vice versa without having to re-encode the video.Same H.264 codec.

MOV has the limitation, but MP4 can be played in almost all players.
MOV need more storage than MP4.
