Findings after flying the Mavic Pro

Camera
  • Found you need to set focus during or before take off to get the best results [blade strike]
  • On startup, the camera will usually auto focus on something on the ground. This is why you should auto focus once air born on something about 50m out. That will give you infinity. You can forget about it from that point on unless you want to later focus on a closer subject. [blade strike]

Flight Modes

  • Sport Mode: Even at these speeds, aircraft is incredibly responsive & nimble. No, it’s not on same level as tweaked-out racing drone, but it's very impressive for a consumer/prosumer personal quadcopter. [Scott Simmie]
  • ATTI Mode: There is no remote controller switch and/or other way to manually switch to ATTI mode.

General
  • The P4 & Mavic are different craft made for different users. Some will have both but this will probably have my phantoms sitting longer just do to the fact you cant take this anywhere with very little spaced used with 95% of the performance. [blade strike]
  • It does not show props as much as the P4. ONLY at very extreme angles and ONLY in sport mode. [blade strike]
  • We've had no problem with hand catching. Just grab it by the body from underneath. Ensure there is no wind to stop mid-air adjustments. [Joe_DJI]
  • Incredibly sturdy and our units here, after dozens of hours of flight time, show no signs of sloppiness or wear [Joe_DJI]
  • It's not a new Phantom; not a new Inspire. It's unlike anything DJI has produced in the past. [Scott Simmie]

Performance
  • Have flown in 15 MPH with solid footage [blade strike]
  • Handles the same wind as the P4 by my testing [blade strike]
  • A little bit of wind & piro does cause some altitude drop (about a foot or two) but it does recover. [blade strike]
  • Gives you high wind warning, but does not issue RTH unless you do or it loses contact with RC [blade strike]
  • If you are experienced with the P4, it will feel very familiar to you -- but it's even more stable [Joe_DJI]
  • The Mavic hung there like it was glued in space [Scott Simmie]
  • Noticeably quieter than the P4 [Scott Simmie]
  • Flawless, smooth, and highly responsive [Scott Simmie]
  • Lower weight makes it feel more agile/nimble [Scott Simmie]

  • You can also use the micro on the side for video out [blade strike]

Welp, time to invest in a microUSB-to-HDMI cable. Would definitely be neat to have a larger monitor next to you for displaying FPV to a crowd.

  • Camera Cover: It is to protect the camera for transport. Easily removable. Yes you can fly with it but it is not recommended. [Tahoe Ed]

  • Has Focus and 2X optical zoom [Tahoe Ed]

  • Terrain Follow Mode: means that you can race up a slope behind a subject while remaining at a constant height between 1 ft (0.3 m) and 33 ft (10 m) [DJI]

  • Updated version of DJI’s ActiveTrack recognizes common subjects such as people, bicyclists, cars, boats and animals, which then sends Mavic Pro to follow behind, lead in front, circle above or track alongside the subject, keeping the camera focused on the subject while you concentrate on flight maneuvers [DJI]
  • It can distinguish between people, cars, bicycles, and even animals. And it can track each of them, in a variety of modes: It can follow from behind, lead from the front, track alongside – even orbit the moving subject while keeping the camera locked on. [Scott Simmie]
  • it can follow someone up a slope while maintaining a pre-programmed altitude above ground level (think following a mountain biker or hiker as they ascend). [Scott Simmie]

Raise your arms or wave to it to make it follow you, and when you're ready for your photo, make a box shape with your fingers. The lights under the Mavic's front arms will start to flash, and you will have three seconds to strike your pose before it takes a photo [B&H]
  • Tripod Mode caps the Mavic's maximum speed at just 2.2 mph, while the control stick sensitivity of the remote controller is dulled to give you the precision you need for accurate framing. It is also great for flying indoors or other small spaces where the Mavic's normal speed may make it more challenging to fly [B&H]
  • Terrain Follow: When you are flying over changing terrain, like following bikers riding uphill, the Mavic's Terrain Follow function uses height information gathered by the on-board ultrasonic system, and its downward-facing cameras to keep you flying at the same height above the ground even as the ground moves. Just set the height from the ground you want — from 9 to 33' — and focus on getting the right shot [B&H]

Findings after flying the Mavic Pro

Camera
  • I have found is that you need to set focus during or before take off to get the best results [blade strike]

Flight Modes

  • Sport Mode: Even at these speeds, the craft is incredibly responsive and nimble. No, it’s not on the same level as a tweaked-out racing drone, but it is very impressive for a consumer/prosumer personal quadcopter. [Scott Simmie]

General
  • The P4 and Mavic are different craft made for different users. Some will have both but this will probably have my phantoms sitting longer just do to the fact you cant take this anywhere with very little spaced used with 95% of the performance [blade strike]
  • The mavic does not show props as much as the p4.. ONLY at very extreme angles and ONLY in sports mode [blade strike]
  • We've had no problem with hand catching. Just grab it by the body from underneath. Ensure there is no wind to stop mid-air adjustments. [Joe_DJI]
  • Incredibly sturdy and our units here, after dozens of hours of flight time, show no signs of sloppiness or wear. [Joe_DJI]
  • It is not a new Phantom; not a new Inspire. It is, in fact, unlike anything DJI has produced in the past. [Scott Simmie]

Performance
  • I have flown in 15mph with solid footage [blade strike]
  • It handles the same wind as the P4 by my testing [blade strike]
  • A little bit of wind and piro does cause some altitude drop (about a foot or two) but it does recover. [blade strike]
  • Does give you high wind warning but does not issue rth unless you do or it loses contact with RC [blade strike]
  • If you are experienced with the Phantom 4 it will feel very familiar to you, but it is even more stable. It's hard to describe accurately the feeling of flying it, but the work our engineers put into it really shows. [Joe_DJI]
  • The Mavic hung there like it was glued in space [Scott Simmie]
  • It was also noticeably quieter than the Phantom 4, therefore much less obtrusive for people who don’t like the buzzing of drones. This is a major difference. [Scott Simmie]
  • Flawless, smooth, and highly responsive [Scott Simmie]
  • The lower weight of this machine makes it feel more agile and nimble [Scott Simmie]

Expect most of these features on the P5.

"Has Focus and 2X optical zoom". I believe it is 2x digital zoom.
I cannot find a mention of this anywhere else, so I'll strike it from this list for now. It seems it would have been listed in DJI's specs if it really had an optical zoom.

What P5? In all seriousness, are we sure there'll be one? Seems to me the Phantom was a cheaper and more accessible drone than the Inspire. A design that spawned around 4 years ago with the P1.

Here we have the Mavic, which is even cheaper and you can bring it with you far easier. From the looks of it it will handle impact/crashes better too but we can't know for sure.

If you want top quality, you go Inspire X5. If you want portability, you go Mavic. When they come up with a better camera for the Phantom, that camera will be able to fit the Mavic as well.

What place is there for Phantom?

That's a great summary, thank you msinger! Can't wait for delivery in October :)

I heard a DJI employee mention that the controller has a vibration feature to notify the user that there is some important info on screen to pay attention to.
Very nice. I see that mentioned here.

The same reason they are going to release the Inspire 2. It's a different class of aircraft.

Yes it most certainly is. It's more cumbersome.

I don't want to come off as ignorant :) I just can't see the reason for a new Phantom now that they have this new form factor. Unless the Phantom X concept is real but even then.. What is there to put on a Phantom that you can't put on the Mavic? I'm not asking you directly, more to myself. I just can't think of anything.

Look the quality of the Mavic
