saw on the news tonight a drone hit a Blackhawk chopper.
hit the blade than the windshield.
nobody got hurt.
 
At least it was a military aircraft, and better equipped to take punishment. At a quick glance it looks like a legal place to fly, but the altitude is going to be criticized in such a busy airspace.
How was it in a legal place? I thought all drones were prohibited in NYC, with the exception of the 5 parks designated for the use of model aircraft.

Right - I was just looking at airspace and TFRs - I'd forgotten that NYC had enacted a widespread ban on operations.

One of the five parks where in NYC where it is legal to fly drones, LaTourette Park, is in Staten Island and about 3 miles from where the strike took place.

Can one of the moderators merge this thread with the other one?
 
There are certain waterways that are outside the 5mi radius of NY airports too. Just launch from your boat.
