How far can a stock Phantom 2 fly?

Just wondered if anyone knows how far a stock Phantom 2 can fly without losing signal? I heard theres a screw on the back of the controller you turn to get more distance, is this true?

A number of us have made 3km or more. Not bad considering P2 is rated at 1km range.
