Does anyone know how accurate the fly home amber battery mark is in the DJI App? For example, if you were to take off and fly downwind until reaching the return to home mark - could the into wind leg coming back - coupled with the climb and descent to RTH altitude - be beyond your battery remaining?

I'm pretty sure that the app indicator isn't able to take winds into account.
It's a pretty good indication but you have to add a layer of extra thought allowing for things like wind.
You never want to get into trouble with your Phantom still out there.
The last 10% in the battery is nowhere near as much as the 1st 10%.
It's a very good practice to be home with a good safety margin.

Give your self some margin for headwinds. At 8% battery she will autoland and it make it no difference where or what under it. I was lucky, one in a neighbors yard three blocks away and another time in the woods with minor damage. It was my battery having a failure would drop fro 65% charge down to 8%. Once I figured out which battery it was.... Recycled it

Sorry about the battery should have clarified that. Our city has recycle bins that you can discard old batteries in and they recycle the components. It's just trashing a battery in the proper place. Thrown away, junked gone bye bye.
