Flytrex Live 3G and T-Mobile

On my Flytrex 3G I started out with T-Mobile. Their pre-paid setup was $10 a month. But when I began, the account said all along that the price would increase to $20 a month starting in January 2015. I then cancelled and have not gotten any new service and wont until DJI is finished with my quad.

I do plan to hook up with a H2o account when the time comes here in the next few weeks.

7) If all goes well (and it should), they will just plug in a dummy IMEI number for the Flytrex associated with the SIM card. I confirmed this by logging into the T-Mobile website and checking my account details. The IMEI is definitely not the one I gave them over the phone for the Flytrex.
It would be interesting to see if someone else following this process gets the same dummy IMEI as you.

I'm actually pretty surprised it hasn't been as simple as when I did it. I heard the guy at the store say "I just want to use the default IMEI" when I tried to activate in store. I also read a post on rcpilots that eluded to the same thing, which inspired me to try it.

PP,
If they can't even find the plan, then ask for someone else. It definitely exists and is even listed on the T-Mobile website, listed under BYOD or BYOT (bring your own tablet, not sure which one). Josh was the rep I spoke to, but with no last name not sure it will help.

You can't do it in the store, they will F it up. The store I went to actually signed me up for some other plan and when I called to activate, the rep "Josh" had to cancel the plan and sign me up for the 200MB one.

Thought I would update and says thanks for your post. I finally got T-Mobile to work. After several tries the rep transferred me to a 2nd level rep. I assume they used a default IMEI # to get me going. A few weeks later I went into a store and after about an hour I got a 2nd SIM card up and running for my 2nd P2. So far both are working great and I have the H2O as a back up. Thanks again, persistence paid off.

I've seen numerous posts around the interwebs about whether Flytrex works with T-Mobile. It does. And they will also allow you to use the 200MB/month for life plan with the device... which, for a 1 time charge of $10, basically gives you free Flytrex usage forever (unless you fly 8 hours/day for 30 days). Here's how I did it:

1) Go to a T-Mobile store and buy a pre-paid GSM sim card. Make sure you specify data, not just voice. Not sure if this matters, but better to be safe.
2) Go home. Don't even try to get the salesperson to activate it for you. Nobody really knows of the 200MB for life plan, and they'll need the Flytrex IMEI, which wont work (more on this later). Then they'll try to sell you a 1GB/month plan for $30/month, which is way overkill.
3) Call the activation number on the SIM when you get home and tell them you'd like to activate a SIM card for a BYOD pre-paid plan, they'll ask you which plan and tell them "200MB/month for life". If the rep doesn't know what you're talking about, tell him or her to look again, it exists.
4) Once they find the plan, they will ask for the IMEI of the device you're going to be using. Give it to them (it's in your Flytrex account settings, click the Live link, click Manage next to the device youre trying to register, its on the bottom of the page).
5) At this point, they will tell you that the IMEI you provided is for a cell phone and it won't work. The 200MB for life plan is meant for tablets, so just ensure them that it isn't a cellphone. I told them I was working on a hobby project that requires a GSM data connection.
6) If they push back, just make up what the hobby project actually is, or tell them what the Flytrex does, and that it will use far less than 200MB/month. Make sure you mention that there is no way to interact with the device, because they may want you to log onto the T-Mobile activation website from the device.
7) If all goes well (and it should), they will just plug in a dummy IMEI number for the Flytrex associated with the SIM card. I confirmed this by logging into the T-Mobile website and checking my account details. The IMEI is definitely not the one I gave them over the phone for the Flytrex.
8) That's it. They said it can take up to 2 hours for activation, but my Flytrex LED went from purple to blue to blinking green while I was still on the phone confirming that I got the plan I was originally requesting.

A couple of other things:

They will ask you if you want to add a credit card to the account. I assume it's to add credits to the account if you go over 200MB. Since I don't plan to, I didn't. I also didn't trust that I was signed up for the correct plan and didn't want to get charged if that were the case. I recommend not adding a card just in case. You can always add one to the account after the SIM is active and you can confirm the plan is the right one. I may end up adding one now, because it would suck to go over 200MB for some reason, then have a fly away and not have the Flytrex transmitting because you're over your data allowance.

Write down the phone number they generate for the SIM!! You will need it to log into the T-Mobile site and look at your account details and confirm you got the right plan, add credits, etc.

The 200MB/month plan is meant to be tied to 1 particular device. However, (and I have yet to confirm this but will when I get another Flytrex in 2 weeks) since they put in a dummy IMEI, the network will never know whether you put the SIM in another device, so I assume you can use the same SIM with multiple Flytrex's and essentially share the 200MB.

Hope this helps.

Excellent posting bbfpv, this is exactly the process I did with ATT except I went to the store. They went to the Flytrex website and got it working and when I got home, it was activated and ready to go.

I too just came back from the T mobile store and was able to follow bbfpv's instructions to get setup. Only difference was i got a young techy girl @ the store that new all about how to set it up with the dummy IMEI#. She said most people in stores don't know you need to scan a mobile hotspot device in the store to 'trick' the system. Anyway, I'm all setup without giving any credit card info or anything else but my name.

After reading this post I was able to get T-Mobile to get my 200MB/month for life plan all setup in the store. Only problem with T-Mobile and this route is that there is no way to register on their site to see your usage, setup a credit card (if you want to do so), and see your SIM's status. They require that the SIM initial registration occur on a device. I'm going to go back into the store and see if they'll insert the SIM into a test device long enough for me to register. From there you can manage your account from a web browser. Wish me luck.

If that doesn't work, I'm going with H2O. Seems like a simpler route, although more expensive.

When they set you up you should have gotten a phone number for the SIM. You use that on the site to view usage, etc. I do it from time to time, though the data usage is so little with the flytrex that my data usage is barely registered. But you can definitely log in to the site. Good luck.

Is it possible to pull off the same 200mb plan magic as described here with a different GPS device (other than the Flytrex)?? I would like to get a flytrex, but I don't want to mess with the warranty status with DJI for my P3.

Should be the same process. Key is getting them to activate the SIM w/ a dummy IMEI so you can use it in anything that can take a GSM SIM. good luck!

Ok, one other question. After reading about the guy who met the techy rep at the store who scanned a TMobil hotspot IMEI and made it work, I had an idea. Why not go into the store and just find the IMEI number yourself on one of these devices and give them that over the phone when you call to activate. Then you can avoid the headache of making them figure out a working dummy IMEI. The only issue I see is if that IMEI won't work if it's already registered or will stop working if someone else registers it. Thoughts?

I think I covered this in my original post. The IMEI has to roll up to a valid t-mobile tablet device for there to be no questions asked. Thats why you tell them it's for a GPS tracker that uses GSM to communicate and uses a tiny fraction of the 200MB/month. Or tell them it's a hobby project that requires a data sim to work and it's ridiculous to pay monthly it uses such little data. Or make something else up. Bottom line, the plan exists, they probably have never heard of it, so you kinda have to hold their hand until they just give up and submit it w/ the dummy IMEI.

So I just tried doing this with a SIM card I got at a T-Mobile store and the phone rep (I spoke with two) said that they can't use the dummy IMEI because that is what actually connects it to the 200MB plan. They assured me there is no way to grab that plan without the purchase of a device with an IMEI that connects it.

Any further information on the number called or the verbiage used would be great.

Otherwise, it looks like H20 is the way I go.

So then just use the IMEI on your device and when they tell you it's not a tablet IMEI, explain to them what you're trying to do and that it's not a cell phone. Thats how I started the process and ended up w/ the dummy IMEI.

I did start with the flytrex IMEI and then had to explain what it was. They then tried putting in the dummy or default IMEI and while it would activate the sim, it wouldn't allow the 200mb plan. I made it pretty clear others have done it, so they bumped me up to the next level but got the same result.

I've spoken to three different people at this point, but I will try again today.

the 200mb plan is for tablet only, make sure they are putting in a tablet IMEI. And make sure they know it's been done by numerous people all over the country....

You can also try using an IMEI from one of their demo units. Thats what the store did for me on my 2nd T Mobile card for my 2nd P2. Apparently it doesn't matter if there are duplicate IEMI #'s in their system.
