Heads Up! There is been a slight change to the Part 107 recurrence training. The roll-out will change from 3/1/21 to 3/16/21. This was so it would be in "accordance with the memorandum of January 20, 2021, from the Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, titled “Regulatory Freeze Pending Review"." Basically, a new administration has the right to put any new rule "on hold for review" if it was added to the Federal Register during a specific time period between transitions.

It's very common. Although a pain in the backside for some. If you need to get your 107 current before 3/17/21, you'll need to take the in person recurrent test (UGR) one more time before you can take advantage of the new training. Unfortunately.

If your 107 is current after 3/1/21, this will not affect you.

If you have any questions, ask below. We'll get them answered for you as best we can.

Thanks for the head up, Al. I went non current the end of January and was waiting for the March 1 training to be available. It's not an issue for me yet - I mainly photo / video boats, and the lakes are still frozen up here LOL. Hopefully it will come out on 3/16 and not be further delayed.

From what I'm able to gather, the document you posted here has not yet been published as official by the FAA, and the training has not officially been pushed back as of this writing.
Of course, that could change at any time between today and Monday. If that does change, I'll pass that on as soon as I get word.
Night flights and OOP are still effective as of 3/16.

It has been published.

The date is March 16. I called the help line in the FAA Drone Zone yesterday. The gentleman confirmed it will be the 16th.

Ok so I need to take my recurrent by 3/22/2021 to stay current with my 107. Is there additional training I need to take now to fly night or OOP or is everybody going to be allowed to fly OOP? Will the recurrent test have questions on this?

I was just looking through Gold Seal training and saw they have a night training but nothing on OOP.

Thanks in advance!

From what I heard on the Pilot Institute your night training will count for your recurrent.
What about flying over people without a waiver is that something that everybody is allowed to do now (after 3/16/21)?

Guess I gotta dig into the regs...

From what I’ve read your drone will have to meet these two regs.

You can use this calculator to have an idea how much damage your drone will inflict at different altitudes.

The only way I know of how to meet these regs with a phantom 4 is with a parachute.

Ok so besides what skymonkey wrote above, gotta have prop guards, remote ID, be labeled that UAV complies with certain categories 1,2,3 or 4 etc. possibly pass a airframe safety inspection too or in lieu of certain other things.

And here I thought it was gonna be clear cut and simple. So basically keep doing what I’ve been doing.

Heads UP!! Many of our fellow Part 107 Operators are failing to read the fine print and taking an online test for MANNED Aircraft Pilots and it does NOT satisfy the requirements to make non Manned Pilots Current!! Below is an exert I put out on a couple of Part 107 groups that I felt like needed to be shared here.

Online ReCurrency:
There is a Part 61 online recurrency exam but it's for Current Part 61 (manned aircraft) Pilots only. Unfortunately many Part 107 operators have stumbled onto this test and did not take the time to read the NOT SO FINE print at the top of the page which clearly ( and not in fine print) states the following (bold added by me but other than that it's Copy & Paste) -
*******************************************************************************************************************************
Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent Course Introduction

The FAA has developed regulations to allow the operation of small unmanned aircraft systems (small UAS) in the National Airspace System (NAS) for purposes other than recreational aircraft operation. The rules are specified in 14 CFR part 107 and address UAS classification, certification, and operating rules.

This course is designed for part 61 pilot certificate holders who have a current flight review (in accordance with 14 CFR part 61.56) and wish to remain current as a part 107 remote pilot with a small UAS rating. References to “part 61 pilot certificate holders” specifically refer to holders of pilot certificates other than student pilot certificates. Part 61 pilot certificates include sport pilot, recreational pilot, private pilot, commercial pilot and air transport pilot certificates.

As a certificated pilot, much of what you already know about manned aircraft applies to the operation of small unmanned aircraft. This course assumes the learner has a remote pilot certificate and operational knowledge of 14 CFR part 61, “Certification: Pilots, Flight Instructors, and Ground Instructors,” and 14 CFR part 91, “General Operating and Flight Rules.” The course focuses on the knowledge areas of 14 CFR part 107 that are beyond the operational knowledge of parts 61 and 91.

Others may take this course as a self-study resource, including:

  • Holders of a part 107 remote pilot certificate who do not hold a part 61 pilot certificate (or part 61 pilot certificate holders without a current flight review or other provisions of 14 CFR part 61.56)
  • Aviation Safety Inspectors (ASIs)
  • Aviation Safety Technicians (ASTs)
  • FAASTeam Program Managers (FPMs)
  • Anyone interested in learning more about 14 CFR part 107
*******************************************************************************************************************************

So several (and I mean a LOT) operators who wanted to sneak under the wire to get their Part 107 Currency spent approx 2hrs (maybe more LOL) studying and testing for something they THOUGHT was making them current but in fact was just a PRACTICE test for them. If you don't hold a Part 61 license and you are CURRENT with your BFR that test is nothing but practice.

The above is a classic example of why you need to read and ABSORB everything the FAA puts on their pages in training and test materials. The DEVIL is in the DETAILS.

Hopefully the Online Recurrency Training will indeed be released 3/16/2021 so you can take it then and get Current again.

There is no "Training" ahead. The training module and everything needed to become current with the new changes will all be released at the same time.

Gold Seal has had A Night Flight module since it was released by the FAA way back when. The FAA has not released the new info to any of the 3rd party facilities as of yet.

OOP wont be a big thing unless you're flying one of the smallest aircraft right now. Those not flying a MICRO UAS will have to wait for RID to come online to full meet OOP requirements. I'll release the Cliff's Notes on that in another thread if needed.

Keep in mind it's not Prop Guards.... You'll need Prop Cages to be compliant with OOP rules.

From what I heard on the Pilot Institute your night training will count for your recurrent.

Correction and apology to the Pilot Institute, night training "WILL NOT"count for your recurrent training.

If you need to meet recurrent requirement then you need to take the free FAA Recurrent Training.

I’m gonna try and schedule recurrent testing and see how it goes. Thanks.

You’re going to have to pay $160.00 to take the test or you can wait till March 16 and take the Free recurrent training.
I thought the free online training was only for manned pilots (part 61 certified), otherwise we still had to go take the recurrent test. I’m hearing different things...

The 107 UAS recurrent course on the faasafety.gov website right now is for for part 61 pilots with a current flight review only. This course will satisfy recurrent training for part 107 pilots. They will need to take the night flight and OOP training on March 16th if they wish to fly at night and OOP.

If you are part 61 pilot and don’t have a current flight review then the course online right now will not count for your recurrent training for part 107. You can use it for self study. If this is your situation then read below on how to get current.

If you are a part 107 pilot who’s recurrent ended March 1st 2021 then you can take the test at an FAA approved testing site and pay $160.00, OR you can wait till March 16th and take the Free recurrent training which will also satisfy night flight and OOP.

If you are a current part 107 and wish to fly at night and OOP then you will have to take night flight and OOP training offered on the faasafety.gov website available on March 16th 2021.

My 107 expires the end of March 2021, this month. I’ll wait and see what happens on the 16th, thanks.
