Your post states you have no control. I'd start walking or running in the last known direction of the Phantom. However, I'd also not go beyond sight/hearing of your home point as there is a good chance the Phantom is returning to home. On that note I'd also switch/click the RTH button/switch.
Things also change slightly depending on the model of Phantom.
If it's not too bad to make you want to land then immediately go up. It usually clears obstacles and causes you to get better gps signal if possible. Up usually has less stuff to hit.
How do you go up if you have no control? The best you can do is hit the RTH and keep trying to aim the TX in the last general direction of the bird and see if the signal reestablishes itself.
