3rd part apps tend to do something (either better or different) than the free app from DJI.
For example, Litchi has an FPV mode that supports Google Cardboard, AutoPilot supports flying a flight path (not really automated waypoint as the app is controlling the UAV) and Ultimate Flight has a number of predefined waypoint types to make building specialized missions a bit easier.
