Dji Go, Litchi without gimbal.

I have substituted parts and now know you have to have the gimbal plugged in for Go Pro and Litchi to allow programmed flights. Without it, there is no GPS or Battery data showing on the apps. So the question is. Does it require the camera or just the gimbal main board ??? I don't want to remove a perfectly good camera to test this. Thanks in advance
