DJI Go 4 Crashed in flight

They may have, but until I hear it from them (Ed and Ken), I'm not updating to iOS 11 on my dedicated iPads used for flying (Air 2 and iPadPro). No benefit. Ed and Ken are far more informed than any of the other DJI reps, and anyone answering the phones at DJI. YMMV.

How do you like the iPad pro? Is it the new 10.5" version?

The original 9.7" iPadPro I have is the perfect size to still fit in the stock tablet holder. I like it a lot! It is brighter than any of the previous iPads, and it runs circles around any CrystalSky monitor at half the price and 3x the screen real estate! The newest 10.5"version is just a hair too large to fit, as I understand it.

I have the 12.9" iPad Pro that I purchased almost two years ago and just after getting the Inspire 1 Pro I built a frame to hold it and the RC as well as a hood I formed from 5mm flat black foam board. I have shoulder straps to support it and it worked well with the Inspire 1 Pro. The RC hangs below the tablet and is supported even without my hands holding it so I can do other things if needed.

When I got the P4P about this time last year I decided on a smaller tablet and picked up a 9.7" Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and built another frame to support it and the RC as well as a foam board hood -- also supported by shoulder straps. The RC hang below just like the other one.

The major problem I've had with the S2 tablet is that I have to futz with it to get the Go 4 app to connect to the RC properly and I generally have to do a tablet power cycle to get it to sync up. Other than that I think the size is just about perfect and a good balance between screen size and portability -- the 12.9" iPad Pro is a bit much with the P4P but OK with the larger Inspire. If you're going out with the Inspire a larger tablet is the least of your issues.

Agree that the 9.7" size is optimal and well balanced, making the RC seem lighter to me than when using a Mini 4, which seems heavier, because the weight is all in the center, with no overhang to the back.

Android GO 4 is always less reliable than iOS, primarily because DJI has been focused on iOS versions since the Inspire 1 with the full sized iPad. The DJI Android programmers always seem to be second string, and behind the iOS group. This is especially notable in the massive problems with the P4P+ and the CS tablets which are all running custom Android GO 4 versions, where there is no excuse, as the app is specifically written for their own hardware!

I’ve read with iPads
Turn of wifi/ turn off Bluetooth
Make sure all others Apps are off and not running.
Close the 24 safari pages that are open
Reset the cache on the app
Recently I’ve had to uninstall/ reinstall the app and that stopped my crashing app issues

If you have current GO4 app crashing issues on iOS 11, update to iOS 11.2 (note: not 11.1.2!). No need to close any other apps, clear the cache, or turn off Wifi and BT. The latest GO 4 is now stable with iOS 11.2. If you are on an older iPad, do not upgrade past iOS 10.3.3. IOS 11.2 requires newer hardware that will turn older iPads/iPhones (iPhone 6+) into a sluggish nightmare! Air 2 and iPadPro should be fine. Mini 4 is marginal.

If you have homelink controlled devices on your ipad, you will need to update from 11.2 to 11.2.1 asap. I am running 11.2.1 on ipad 10.5. So far it works.

It’s actually in the coding, iOS 10 was swift 3, so in the background calling Swift 3 codes is fine On the old DJI go app. The new DJI go app calls Swift 4 coding so it causes the app to crash.

Always make sure to update iOS, developers have to update their apps to comply with newer firmware/OS

Thanks for the clarification, but your recommendation is backwards. Never update iOS until the apps you depend upon have all been properly updated by their developers. For your flying tablet, that means do not update iOS until DJI gives you the green light that GO 4 and DJI GO have already been properly updated to work under the newest iOS, and even then, seriously reconsider! If your older iOS device did not originally ship with the latest iOS version, you will see a major degradation in performance with all apps because your older iOS hardware was not designed for the latest iOS version! E.g., the iPhone 6+ runs like dog crap on iOS 11.2.1! It worked perfectly on iOS 10.3.3! Ask me how I know!

I am a disgruntled Q500 owner who is tired of poor battery life / flight time and poor communication. Sounds like the P4P has issues of its own. If you have the controller with the built in screen are there still issues with it crashing? I wanted the better camera and better communication with the drone, I don’t fly where a can’t see the craft, but at times not even 500’ out I’m losing control and definitely video feed. How stable is communication to the P4P?

It is at the cusp. It is now over 2 years old. I will not be updating it to iOS 11, after the ruination of my iPhone 6+ by iOS11!

I have iPhone 6s Plus that I currently use. I was thinking of getting a Mini 4 since they are on sale for 299 this week at Best Buy’s. I have an iPad Pro 9.7 but wanted a dedicated tablet just for flying. That is why I asked. Interesting article. No mention of the 6s Plus versions being effective. I just go this phone back in October and it was mainly to have for flying. Still I would like to have a larger screen and something dedicated to just flying.

We’re really impressed by the P4P+, Jim. We’re using it professionally, several times almost every day in a remote area. It’s great - everything we expected it to be.

We’ve once had the Go4 app crash, but it didn’t affect us controlling/landing the drone. And we had a floppy/limp camera/gimbal for a couple of minutes (see “viagra” thread). Turning off and on again fixed both.

We like the build-in screen with the remote controller. Quick and easy to start/pack. And the screen is so bright that we’re using in mid-summer under the intense South African sun here in the Southern Hemisphere. [Edited to add: Without a sun hood.]

Your iPhone 6s+ is a generation newer than my older iPhone 6+. I recommend the Mini 4 for daily use for everything else, over the larger iPadPro. That's what I use (I have two of them!) and prefer over the larger iPad, and I keep my larger iPadPro 9.7" for a dedicated flying tablet. The new Mini 4 at BB is also unlikely to have iOS 11 preinstalled, which is good, so it will still be snappy, unlike my now ruined iPhone 6+.

If you complement your P4P+ with a $319 standard P4P RC, you can have the best of both worlds, giving you a choice of RC's, depending upon your P4P needs that day. The P4P+ is a really nice device. I just couldn't wait a year for DJI's Android team all the bugs to get worked out, and had to return mine, and got the P4P instead. I still miss its simplicity!
