BIG pictures-NO

I have noticed members that have posted pictures in this forum can be made big. You right click on them and they enlarge. Sometimes there is a small + sign and another click makes it even bigger. Fills the page. Checking on one of these pictures, I see the size is 3.1 M. Well whenever I try to upload a picture that is over a meg it will not upload. Error message: too big.
So how are some uploading BIG picture files?
