Best way to fix this?

Noticed that the negative lead on my Phantom's battery cable has cracked open, probably due to having to shove the 2700mAh battery in backward.

Simple heat shrink would solve this, but that would mean taking the plug off or unsoldering the wire from the board to slip the shrink on. Is there a better way to fix this other than tape?

I wouldn't electrical tape or plastidip it. When your main discharge leads start breaking down, the best thing to do is replace it. It's an easy solder job, you just need some 14awg silicone jacket battery wire and an XT60 female connector.

If you can stand to have it bit shorter, it looks like your tear is close enough to the end that you could clip it off at the tear and resolder on a new XT60.
