Those News copters had Had Mode C transponder on board and were most likely talking to ATC (Air Traffic Control).

The problem is the general public and that includes a lot of reporters equate our small MRs with the Drones the US uses to kill people in the Mid East. This is one of the reasons I don't like to call these small Multi Rotor RC models "Drones".

And you have to be an idiot to fly over a Refinery, Power Plant, Military installation or a Major Port in todays highly charged paranoid circumstances. Have you read the news lately.

Lets not make it worse, be responsible and enjoy this great hobby in smart places. And don't cheer idiots on and jump to defend their stupid actions.
Amen!

Call it what you want.. Its still a drone. Its like people that call guns "guns" instead of weapons to try to make them SOUND different. At the end of the day... its a weapon!

Anything can be a weapon

But at the end of the day it's a bat .

But a weapon will never bee anything but that. No matter how politically correct you want it to be.

Use spoon here:
DRONE :
1. the male of the honeybee and other bees, stingless and making no honey.
2. an unmanned aircraft or ship that can navigate autonomously, without human control or beyond line of sight: the GPS of a U.S. spy drone.
3. a person who lives on the labor of others; parasitic loafer.
4. a drudge.

Quadcopter : A quadcopter, also called a quadrotor helicopter or quadrotor,[1] is a multirotor helicopter that is lifted and propelled by four rotors. Quadcopters are classified as rotorcraft, as opposed to fixed-wing aircraft, because their lift is generated by a set of rotors (vertically oriented propellers).

Quadcopters generally use two pairs of identical fixed pitched propellers; two clockwise (CW) and two counter-clockwise (CCW). These use independent variation of the speed of each rotor to achieve control. By changing the speed of each rotor it is possible to specifically generate a desired total thrust; to locate for the centre of thrust both laterally and longitudinally; and to create a desired total torque, or turning force.

Quadcopters differ from conventional helicopters which use rotors which are able to vary the pitch of their blades dynamically as they move around the rotor hub. In the early days of flight, quadcopters (then referred to as 'quadrotors') were seen as possible solutions to some of the persistent problems in vertical flight; torque-induced control issues (as well as efficiency issues originating from the tail rotor, which generates no useful lift) can be eliminated by counter-rotation and the relatively short blades are much easier to construct.

Funny how a person can leave out parts of a quote to make stuff fit their agenda...
drone | a stingless male bee (as of the honeybee) that has the role of mating with the queen and does not gather nectar or pollen

Definition of DRONE
1: a stingless male bee (as of the honeybee) that has the role of mating with the queen and does not gather nectar or pollen
2: one that lives on the labors of others : parasite
3: an unmanned aircraft or ship guided by remote control or onboard computers
4a : drudge 1
b : drudge 2

The word 'drone' is here to stay. Even the manufacturers use the term. What is drone? - Definition from WhatIs.com
I personally prefer UAV in general, or helicopter, tricoptor, quadcopter, hexacopter or whatever depending on the model.

@III% Streve all depends on the source. Some don't mention aircraft. ;)

Actually I think MR is the best definition of the Phantoms (Multi Rotor). MRs are quads, hexes and octas I have not heard of dexas yet, but there are octas with 4 arms and 2 motors and props on each arm. These are all the same family s to speak.

Many drones are fixed wing and some are jet propelled even. And some are conventional rotorcraft with a with collective pitch main rotor and tail rotor.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Phantom Pilots forum Keith. I hope that you will take advantage of the benefits that come with membership and that you will be able to use the forum for the exchange of innovative ideas and as a resource for current developments in Phantom quadcopter’s. :)

Learn yes, belittle a person no! Live with your feelings as you also let others is all I get annoyed abot! Best of Flying safety for you all

I was amazed that the reporter mentioned national security and what happened in Paris in the same story as some idiot that crashed his drone trying to get a picture of a refinery. The guy was an idiot for sure but what in the world does his stupid mishap have to do with national security? And to even mention the tragic events in Paris in the same story is utter nonsense not to mention an insult to the families of the poor souls that lost their lives. It would really be refreshing if one of the major news networks took the time to interview and broadcast a story with a representative from the AMA or even an average recreational Phantom Pilot so the public could see that we are not a threat to national security, commercial airlines or the everyday lives of people in which ever country they reside.
