I love my GoPro 3+ black and my Zenmuse Gimbal but I wouldn't want to loose them in a crash ...
With a replacement cost of around £620.00, I have taken to removing the kit when fun flying my Phantom 2.
Although I can still see the telemetry on my fpv screen without the gopro, I can't fly it out of sight.
I had the idea to mount a small camera to the Phantom purely for fpv use, putting a small cable set in which I could just plug in to the small camera. I could then swap them around depending on the type of flight. Funfly/fpv flying/phot shoot flying.
I recall that you can get a small solid state switch which can allow you to switch between cameras using a spare channel on the transmitter. I would investigate this when I swap out the stock tx/rx with a futaba T8J.
I would appreciate any thoughts on these options together with recommendations for a good quality fpv camera.

Here's a couple of examples of the type switch you need for multiple video sources:

But, if you're always going to be using just one or the other camera, and never both, you could just create a cable that would work with whichever of the two you needed at the time.

That site also has a good selection of FPV camera options, but I don't have experience with any of them yet to suggest one:
