Where is the firmware installed? Sd card?

I searched a couple of times can't find answer. I want to upgrade to a faster SD card but I don't know if the firmware or any new firmware version gets installed on the SD card.

Nothing is installed on the memory card. Just pop in the new memory card and start using it.

Firmware is stored in NVM on the controller board.
