When you color grade, do you use Luts, Film Looks, or neither?

I get the most natural looking video without Luts, or Film Looks, but I can never get the kind of character and personality without them. Is there a way to get that kind of character Luts and Film Looks provide on your own without them, and grading by hand? The Luts usually really over saturate the color, and even with Film looks, I have to do a far amount of work to dial them in to fit each specific video. I think ideally I should learn how to create my own Luts, but I don't know where to start. Is there some type of template you can use to create your own Luts? I mainly use Davinci Resolve, and also on occasion Premiere Pro and After Effects. Currently I shoot with a P4P using D-cinelike, 23.97 fps, 4096X2160 4K, and a custom setting of -1,-1,0. Thank you in advance.

Look up Matt Johnson (I think) on youtube. Very good tutorials. He's the bearded fella.
