WEAK SIGNAL?

I have been flying my phantom 3. I took it about 400 feet STRAIGHT ABOVE MY HEAD. On its way up it kept going in and out of strong/weak signal. The antenna was facing straight out. Not bent or anything. Is the reason it was saying week signal because I didn't have the antenna curved (as shown in the pic) and because I shouldn't take it directly over my head?

The long side of the antenna should always point directly at your Phantom. It's a little easier to see how the signal works in this video:
