As you asked: Free, Easy to learn, do the job ...etc.

Just download and install Windows Movie Maker (For Windows 7 is better than for XP)
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-movie-maker-download

You can do many things. These are some of them:
Join, cut, change speed (slow motion or faster), add titles, mute or change levels of video sound, add music, add comments, do transitions between scenes, mix videos and pictures, change duration, fade in - fade out music (just to say, It works for me)

Watch these youtube samples showing what you could do (It toke me just as fast as 10 minutes each):

I just downloaded the trial version of Final Cut Pro X for Mac, tried Adobe Premiere Pro and am totaly lost and at $800 it's far from free, good luck on your search

As Jumanoc says, Windows Movie Maker will work fine to get your feet wet. There are a number of video editing packages out there in the $100 range that will be a step up but going to professional level software like FCP or Premiere also includes a pretty steep learning curve.

And you'll soon find that getting good shots in the first place is most important.
