Upgrading controller firmware.

I see that the aircraft firmware can be upgraded using either the DJI Go app or DJI Assistant 2 software for PC or Mac.

But does DJI Assistant 2 work for the rc (controller) also or am I limited to using only DJI Go?

You must update it using DJI GO.
