Still learning!

You seem to have an eye for the dramatics of filming. You know how to get and captivate one's attention.
I love filming things, but detest editing. My computer and I don't get along. I have worked for large companies operating cameras. If you call it cinematography, PGA tournaments and seminars. I let them do the editing. LOL

Thank you for the kind words! I never seem to have a plan in mind but it usually comes out ok. Lol. And your past jobs sound pretty interesting. Ive always edited on my galaxy phones but recently got a laptop that can pull its own weight in the editing department so im working on it.

Thought that was pretty spectacular
Lol djigo4 auto edit for me,simple and always chooses the bad parts, this one area me learning

Haha i may have to find and use that save me some headache! Lol thanks though Ian means alot coming from a veteran flyer as yourself!
Takes few years to become veteran, I'm still rookie pilot lol & still learning
Gezz that mine huge,we got couple here but not that scale, good stuff keep it up

Thanks man! And yeah it is huge! I honestly didnt know all that was back there. That very first clip was the moment i realized the vastness of it! It was breathtaking! I definitely wasn't expecting all that! Then theres another clip of a smaller quarry nearby as well. Loved flying em!

Wow! I mean just Wow!! This is probably the most dramatic sequence of drone shots that I have seen. Your use of colour grading to invoke a mood is brilliant and something that I have never tried. I edit all my videos using Davinci Resolve but I have always taken great trouble to colour correct to reproduce the scenes as I originally saw them. You have inspired me to try your approach and possibly apply some dramatic LUTs to produce an interesting/thought provoking scene rather than a natural scene.

I also loved your use of tilting the gimbal to look down as you flew over the edge of one of the deeper parts of the opencast mine. This worked brilliantly. I have always tried to avoid changing the gimbal tilt angle greatly and then always very slowly but I have usually ended up regretting making the gimbal move when I am back at home editing the footage.

Keep up the good work and please share some more of your work.

All the best, Martin

Wow! Thank you guys for all the super kind words and support! Im really lost for words! Martin that is probably the most inspiring thing anyone has said to me. I got lucky throwing some stuff together and that was really my first official video with davinci believe it or not..always edited on my phone. I always had a hard time when i moved the gimbal too haha ive never pulled of a pan down then back up like with the quarry there. And to be honest i dont know if they mine there its a quarry i think and i thought they made gravel there. But im ignorant to the process and what they do there. But now i want to know more! I happened to just want to film the big machinery up front and didnt even know all that was back there. It surprised me very much. I have some more shots of it ill mix in with something else! Phantomwolf thank you! I really appreciate it! If you have a channel id love to check out your work! And keep it up you got an awesome fleet! And the best editing software so i hear. Lol i use resolve cause it free. But still in the very early stages of learning. This community is so great! Love how everyone supports each other and we are all in this same amazing hobby together. Thanks everyone! Got some new mountain footage coming up! Safe flying yall!

The first clip is real stunning. Maybe you can get more out of it or film it from another angle.
Are there any problems flying over that mining territory?

Hi Ian,

I can whole heartedly recommend Davinci Resolve as a state of the art editing tool:

1. The standard version is completely free of charge and seems to have nearly all the features of the paid for 'studio' version.
2. You don't even need to have a powerful PC to run it since when you want to work on 4K files you can click an option to generate @optimised' low resolution copies of your video files which are then used for all the editing work. The original high resolution files are still used by Resolve to render the output file. Of course a specialist PC aimed at video editing or gaming that has a high end graphics card will give users an overall more enjoyable experience.
3. YouTube is awash with lots of brilliant Resolve training videos that range for quick start guides through to studio level techniques. So getting going with Resolve is relatively painless and then gradually over a period users can learn new and more advanced techniques at their own pace.

All the best, Martin

Martin,

Appreciated your comments here about DR as I am beginning to work with it as well. One question: can one use it also for stills? I know that there are plenty of good photo suites out there (currently using Darkroom on iPad Pro) but it would be cool if this could all be one-stop-shopping.

Thoughts, anyone...?
