Located in the Extreme northeastern part of Tennessee, The town of Elizabethton was founded in 1799 and is noted for several historical events. It is the site of the first independent American government known as the Watauga Association. It is also the historical site of the Transylvania Purchase. The Overmountain Men crossed the Watauga river and raised a settlement at Sycamore Shoals, now a state Historic site within the town. The East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, better known as the "Tweetsie" railroad, once steamed through town, and the railway has now been converted into a hiking and biking trail drawing many visitors. While most manufacturing has long moved away from the town, Elizabethton is currently undergoing a revitalization process and many new businesses (mostly retail and restaurant) have moved in.
