If my RTH is set to 300 feet and I'm flying at say 400 feet when I lose signal, will the AC descend to 300 feet when RTH is triggered by loss of signal or weak battery?

No. If you are already above your set altitude, it will proceed home at your current altitude. If it was closer than 65ft (20m) away distance wise, it would just descend and land when RTH was initiated.
