King Kong Scaled the Empire State Building

Studio Hock, a drone light show production company, orchestrated a performance where drones simulated King Kong climbing the Empire State Building. This display recreated the iconic scene from the original 1933 film. The drones were engineered to adjust to wind conditions and the vertical landscape of New York City, achieving positional accuracy within five centimeters.

This scene is among the most recognizable involving the Empire State Building in film history. The original King Kong movie significantly contributed to the building's prominence in popular culture.

GNC Deploys Drones to Revolutionize Inventory Management

GNC, the supplement retailer, has implemented drones to automate its inventory management processes. Previously, GNC faced challenges such as diverting material handling equipment for cycle counting, which reduced availability for other tasks, and frequent inventory movement leading to misplaced products and errors. These limitations restricted the company to conducting full cycle counts only two to four times per year.

By automating daily cycle counts with drones, GNC has freed up labor and material handling equipment, resulting in faster order fulfillment and more efficient warehouse operations.

Anduril Unveils Torpedo-Launching Underwater Drone

Anduril Industries has introduced the Copperhead, a new unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) designed to be deployed from larger underwater drones like Anduril's Dive-LD and Dive-XL. The Copperhead system is available in two sizes, Copperhead-100 and Copperhead-500, and can carry various payloads for multiple mission profiles. When equipped with a warhead, it is designated as Copperhead-M, functioning similarly to a torpedo. This development aims to provide a cost-effective and intelligent maritime capability, enabling operators to respond swiftly to undersea threats.

Shane Arnott, Anduril's senior vice president of programs and engineering, highlighted the increasing proliferation of unmanned underwater and surface vehicles, emphasizing the need for advanced technologies to address evolving maritime challenges, particularly in regions like the Indo-Pacific. The unveiling of Copperhead aligns with a broader industry trend focusing on autonomous systems to enhance naval operations.

China Blacklists 11 US Drone Companies

China's Ministry of Commerce has added 11 U.S. drone companies to its "Unreliable Entity List," citing their military technology cooperation with Taiwan as a threat to China's sovereignty and security. The affected companies include Skydio, BRINC Drones, Red Six Solutions, SYNEXXUS, Firestorm Labs, Kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems, HavocAI, Neros Technologies, Domo Tactical Communications, Rapid Flight, and Insitu.

This action prohibits these firms from engaging in import and export activities with China, restricts new investments within the country, and imposes potential travel and financial penalties on associated personnel. The sanctions are expected to disrupt operations for these companies, particularly those reliant on Chinese-made components like batteries and rare earth materials, forcing them to seek alternative suppliers and potentially increasing production costs.

This move may also strengthen China's domestic drone industry by reducing American competition. The inclusion of these companies on the Unreliable Entity List reflects escalating trade tensions between the US and China, especially concerning Taiwan, and mirrors previous US sanctions on Chinese firms.

Houthis Down 3rd US Reaper Drone Amid Ongoing Airstrikes

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have shot down a third US MQ-9 Reaper drone since early March. The US has been conducting these airstrikes for 20 consecutive days, aiming to suppress Houthi aggression in the region. In response to the downing of the first Reaper drone in early March, the State Department imposed sanctions targeting individuals and entities involved in a global illicit finance network supporting the Houthis.

The MQ-9 Reaper drones, valued at approximately $30 million each, are primarily used for intelligence collection but can also be armed with laser-guided Hellfire missiles. As of December 2024, the US Air Force had 230 of these drones in its arsenal. Since October 2023, when the Israel-Hamas conflict began, the Houthis have shot down at least 13 U.S. drones, with some sources suggesting the number could be as high as 17.
