I agree with that. A lot of energy drone uses to stay in the air while the car non to stay on the street. I used the car analogy for better understanding the principle.
At drone it can uses all of the energy just staying in the air with no km accomplish. But we can calculate only the portion of energy used for horizontal movement. The main factor becomes then an air resistance which raises with speed and the length of staying in the air. So at drones the optimal speed will be more than at car. Maybe at 3/4 of maximal speed.
It can be easily to calculate without knowing the drone physics in detail. Optimal time to stay in the air to fly the desired distance adding the air resistance variable at different speed.
And the battery capacity of course.
