No, mystery is not solved. The flight controller knows when it is in the air and you can't turn off motors while in the air like this. This only works when the flight controller recognizes that it's on solid ground... At least that's the way I understand it... Take it up a few feet and test it but I'm pretty sure you won't be able to turn off motors like this. This only works on the ground.

Not true. CSC command does work in flight. It has to: if your Phantom develops a mind of its own, you need a method for shutting down in an emergency situation.
