Phantom 4 obstacle avoidance when flying backwards

No. Nor will it avoid obstacles if flying sideways.

You can fly it backwards.. Just make sure the nose is pointing forward!

You need to yaw 180 degrees if you want obstacle avoidance!...the sensors must be pointing forward at all times.

So,p4 is not like matrice 100,it has only 2 sensors at the front.
