Two ways to pilot Phantom: sight or FPV.

Filming as I did, must use FPV, so it becomes easy to get used to use FPV...and don't look for Phantom, where is where is going, and so on...

Here's a short clip from last weekend's range testing and Flytrex testing flight. It was quite gusty, and I was mainly taking the Vision to it's horizontal control extremes (and trying, but failing - just! - to get her to 50mph) so the video wasn't inspiring. However I've got what I think is a nice clip of a climb to 1000ft above ground level here. That's the River Thames as it flows through South Oxfordshire - quite a nice viewpoint from up there!

These clips were taken on a windy day on Friday. I went up to The Ridgeway (ancient trail over the downs) but it was too windy, I only lasted 5 minutes. I was using atti mode to try and get some shots without massive lean, and you can see how fast the wind was blowing me along! Came down to some lower ground and found a pleasant spot to fly in on a disused railway line that's now a footpath - still quite breezy but not so bad, and more atti mode practice. Bonus footage includes me being jumped on by a dog, showing a little boy a closer view of what he called my "spaceship", another encounter with a Red Kite and in the last few seconds a downwind speed run right over the top of my head... :shock:

Filming the Phantom in slow motion

The Phantom 2 Vision isn't my first odd film-making tool; a few years ago I bought a Casio Exilim high speed (slow motion) camera. Today I put the Phantom into a hover and recorded it with the Exilim at speeds up to 1000 FPS. A relic of the pre-full HD days, with the Exilim image size shrinks as frame rate goes up so at the highest speed the video is a bit small/grainy.

As impressed and pleased as I am with my P2V, I daydream about having a 'copter that could carry my Casio EX-F1 with its high-speed video and 60 fps stills!

I got my P2V in early December, and when the weather is decent, I've been learning to fly it. I've been very impressed so far, and I have to say it's a heckuva conversation starter when I take it out. Over Christmas, we visited some friends in Aspen, and I took Hobbes (had to name it) to the ghost town of Ashcroft, CO. Despite the cold (below freezing) temperatures and an elevation of 9700 feet (2956m), Hobbes delivered about 20 minutes of flight time.
