P3s connection issiue

Hello all, I bought a P3s used and have been having a lot of fun with it! I was looking for another battery to keep me flying longer and came across another P3s that had been crashed more than a few times and was missing the camera and gimble but had a good battery so I bought it for spare parts and the extra battery! The crashed drone starts up fine and gives me the be beep sound just like my working one, so I started thinking hey what if I put the main board and motors on one of those Mavic body conversions, could be cool! My problem is I have not been able to connect the broken drone to my controller. I have tried doing it through the DJI software and also the manual way, both without success. Any thoughts? Do I need a camera and gimble on there to get this to work?
