Hahaha how far away were you when it died?
I don't know , 400 feet, pretty much fell right in front of me in the grand scheme of things, close enough I thought for sure I was gonna make it[emoji41]

I think that qualifies buddy. Keiths dropped close too.
Thanks Ed! But as you can see in the pic, its clearly not home, close.

Flytrex only counted it as 10.0 miles. So leave it as it is, i'll get it soon though. It was really hard to judge the wind today every 2 miles it would be coming from a different direction. So 35 on the way out and 34 on the way in! I thought about waiting two hours for it to be a solid direction but then there was a chance of rain. Oh well[emoji41]

You're making me feel like a bad pilot. I can get 38+ min consistently but you're right. I can do test runs at different distances but you never know how the wind will be 8mi out. And god forbid you forget the rubber band and go to walgreens!

Yeah but you're never really flying in real calm weather right. My last couple flights have been 34 to 35 mph both ways. That's great for battery consumption and distance

Monday i had just a slight tailwind. Test run was 30mph out. 34-35mph back. Delay 40min to get rubber band and storm front approaches and the wind shifted mid flight. 27mph back. Game over.

Since you posted your dirty bird, here's my close call landing a few days ago. I'm glad i made it to land :) Again, i made it 25k out .. only back halfway :) my "not gonna make it, oh **** moment" is at 1132, landing is right at the end. it gets more interesting at 13:30. Did not want to land in that farmers field, he has a shotgun. The place I landed was a more friendly yatcht club (but still short of my emergency spot).

I also learned that, during the auto-land, the bird is more controllable than I had thought. You can still increase altitude, its just not gonna stay in the air for long :) I love this!

I found this out the other day when I realized I wouldn't make it back home...I did the same thing as you...looked around for a safe landing spot, and then drove like hell to retrieve it.

Similar to skiing, "if you aren't falling you aren't learning"... if you haven't had to ditch the bird somewhere short, you ain't pushin' it! hahahaha

I've made the comment to you guys lately how I think I autoland or crash land short from home point more than I make it back to my feet. So seeing these two posts sparked a little investigation into my flight logs. So before even opening up the logs, I set the criteria, I would start from my last flight this morning and only count flights that were over 40,000 feet.
I went back 10 flights. To my surprise, it was 50-50. Five flights made it back and five flights crash landed/auto-landed in the past 10 flights over 40,000 feet

In my case, i drove a few miles .. then jogged a few miles. While there were roads, they are ALL closed access. I'm getting old, and fat .. and i sweated more than day than I'd like to admit :P
