Obstacle avoidance radar - explained?

I've had a look through loads of help files and so on and not really able to find a decent explanation of the obstacle avoidance radar.

I know the top bars are the front and the bottom bars are the back sensors but what are the lines related to- how are they calibrated. I can't seem to figure it out even whilst flying other than don't let them beep!
