I have a red light on the RC...and my nexus shows "authentication problem." I may need to fiddle with it a bit, thanks for the excellent clues.

Do you mean the 2013 version ?

Yes 2013 also called 2nd gen.

Red light means the RC and the AC are not connected. The device is not an issue at all. I can turn on my RC and AC and get a green light, and not even have my tablet powered up.
