At least on my TX the original antenna wire was not soldered. I would not bother splicing, just replace it; one less thing to worry about. Desolder the original wire (if yours is soldered), and solder the new antenna wire onto the transmitter instead. This setup has increased my TX range by over 100% in an urban area with heavy signal noise. YMMV, but the beauty of this setup is that you can switch antennas easily, and pick the one that works best for you.

Is there just a glob of silicone on it to just ensure it stays connected

Increase of my range is about 100% just by replacing the antenna with the one I mentioned. YMMV. After this mod, you can use more directional antennas with higher gain easily, if that is what you desire, or just add a booster.
Carefully remove the silicone (not glue) that covers the connector to the antenna. It is the same connector that is on the pigtail adapter I used and plugs right in. If you look at the connector on the pigtail adapter it will be all clear to you how this is connected. It's straight forward.

For the TX with cloverleaf, all you need is:
Pigtail adapter: http://amzn.to/19UBpTw
Cloverleaf antenna: http://amzn.to/1imYXVz (make sure to use the TX antenna; this comes with both TX and RX)
I used the second pigtail adapter to modify the repeater. I then attached the TP-LINK 9db directional antenna: http://amzn.to/1djdmya This is also easily replaceable and you can add a booster to that setup, if you feel like it.
Next: modify the antenna mount so that it is easy to transport (and disconnect from the TX), test the TX with other antennas to see what works best, possibly add a booster to the TX for fun and to see how that goes.
