Mary Colliery No.2 pit, Lochore, Fife, Scotland - Phantom4k

It's so sad that we've lost our mining in the UK. In the area where I live, from in the teens of collieries within 10 miles, they've all gone.

Now there are 4 headstocks - 2 each at Pleasley and Clipstone.

Back in the 50's all the local villages had a colliery, which encouraged its growth.

I must admit that I didn't go down the local mines - Dad warned me that if I went down t' pit for a job, I'd "get 6 lace-holes" - kicked up the backside until I couldn't sit down :(

Instead I worked in the clay industry, working in the laboratories of companies who made both refractory products (firebricks etc) and later, building bricks.

I worked at a mine in WV. and we had a UK superintendent. I was a state mining inspector and it was a good paying job. Which was probably to it's demise as many mines are closing for cheaper Imports.
