I've read that display isn't real bright. Is this true? Is it still usable?

Get a hood and you'll be fine, I use one now and it's not terribly bad

I have no trouble using my iPad Mini 2 when not standing in direct sunlight. While some tablets are brighter than others, none are easy to see in direct sunlight. The best remedy is to fly in the shade as much as possible.

I use an iPad Mini 2 without a problem. But I do use a hood.
