I saw a Youtube video in which a guy ran a ground wire from an ESC ground wire to a spot on the reflective copper foil underneath the GPS sensor. He soldered the wire to the foil. Claims it increased the number of satellites.

This seems counterintuitive to me. Has anyone tried it?

Shielding is effective in most cases reported here.

Grounding is not necessary.

There is not a true ground on the quad, shielded cable yes. The Shield for the GPS is sort of a EMI ( electro magnetic shield) for the electrical components to help prevent interference with the GPS puck in receiving satellite signals.
