Ok maybe I am stupid but what does this guy have on his fling wing that makes him know the altitude and distance his wing is from him. He can read it somewhere in the goggles. Is this a special setup he did?

He is using and OSD system (On Screen Data). It is a litle component that gets info from GPS unit, battery voltage and other sensors and put it over the camera video feed and then send all to VTX. Here is a sample and some OSD kits:
