There are similar algorithms being demonstrated. DJI's software engineers are not there yet.

I wonder if it can maintain orientation too, to attempt to fly home. Otherwise, this should be correlated with attitude+velocity and only performed to break falls, much like a parachute.

I wonder how hazardous the centrifugal forces exhibited for attached equipments (gimbal, go pro, etc).

I would think preferable to a uncontrolled, possibly powered flight into the ground.
