It's really simple... just about everyone wants lower cost, more flight time, and less charge time.
The problem with asking on this site is most of the Phantom's use a proprietary LiPo battery. An exception is the 1.. It uses the more generic or typical hobby LiPo with external balancing connectors, etc.
The P2's use a 2P3S (11.1V) configuration This 'intelligent' battery incorporates additional h/w and s/w to help make it safe for the 'every (wo)man' by performing balancing, over charge / discharge, and short circuit protection, etc. It utilizes serial communication for authentication and various functions and this is the sticking point for 3rd party vendors.
The P3s are using a 4S config. minimum with 2P also likely (not positive) to achieve the capacity. These too have the 'intelligent' features.
A similar story for DJI's Inspire-1 battery.
